It sux.

I have gold level support with SUN, but their engineers sux, one doesn't even know his own hardware configuration and gave me stupid instructions. Their StorageTek 6140 has no serial ports, and they asked if I have a null modem cable to test the serial in. Then they ask me for the part number of the cable (D9 pin->RJ45), which I was like "duh, this cable was provided by SUN!?!?!, what part number is there on the cable?!?! You mean it makes a difference?"

After that he told me the serial console is only for SUN engineers and I retorted, if that's the case, then why put the instructions in the manual? It's for crucial emergency configuration if the controllers are not contactable via a host's CAM.

Then the SUN engineer told me it's ok, the problem is not serious. Oh goodness. "So what? I deploy to my client's site, then when it has the problem, I bring back the StorageTek to SUN and then replace a new one and tell what to my clients?"

And yet empty promises whole day, promised me to come by and finish up servicing one of my 4200s that has the BMC/SP by end of the day didn't. Another committed to calling me back in for an appointment tomorrow to show me that the serial console into my StorageTek is ok and fine but didn't.

And then another one of my 4200's BMC/SP just went uncontactable, I totally cannot go into the Java console ILOM. Arghhhhh what is wrong with the stupid SUN systems!! They're all new and I'm gold level support but I'm not getting any!!!! ARGH!

Relax, my production SE6130 took them 16 days to fix a controller problem.

In total, it crashes 4 times in that 16 days. 2 times require restore from tape.

The best part! On the morning of the 2 times require restore from tape, I met Michael at Somerset MRT station. So I am not sure it's Sun system sux or Michael s**.

Nevertheless, Michael you are still my best friend.

PS. Michael, can you please avoid Somerset MRT every morning at all cost.

TA :P

for what i know, the cable used to console to sun machine need to be the right one, as our sun engineer test out for 1 week in order to find out the cable the use is not compatible .... in order to do input to the console ...

The default one provided is not enough. The engineer connected a 6pin male/female converter to a null modem cable then to his notebook and he managed to send a < BREAK > signal to the machine.

i) DIN 9pin->RJ45 cable connect to
ii) RJ45->Serial connector connect to
iii) 6pin male/female connector connect to
iv) Null modem cable connect to laptop

Finally, got it up.
